Huang Da Xian (黃大仙), the “Great Immortal Huang,” is one of the most widely worshipped deities in southern China, Hong Kong, Macau, and among Cantonese communities worldwide. His story is a remarkable journey from humble shepherd boy to Taoist immortal — a story of spiritual transformation, miraculous power, and boundless compassion for the ordinary people.

Huang Da Xian's mortal name was Huang Chuping (黃初平), born in the Eastern Jin dynasty (around 328 CE) in Jinhua County, Zhejiang Province. His family was poor, and from a young age he worked as a shepherd, tending goats in the mountains near his home. It was a simple, modest life — yet it held within it the seeds of something extraordinary.

When Huang Chuping was about fifteen years old, he encountered a Taoist immortal while tending his flock in the mountains. The immortal, recognizing the boy's spiritual potential, invited him to enter a cave on Chisheng Mountain (赤城山) to study Taoism. The boy followed, and in that cave, time seemed to stand still. What felt like a short time inside the cave turned out to be forty years in the outside world.

Meanwhile, Huang Chuping's elder brother Huang Chugui (黃初起) searched everywhere for his younger brother, never giving up hope. After many years, he finally found Huang Chuping still looking young, healthy, and luminous, as if no time had passed.

The elder brother noticed that the goats his brother had once herded were nowhere to be seen — only white stones were scattered across the hillside. Huang Chuping raised his staff, called out to the stones, and commanded them to rise. In an instant, the white stones transformed back into thousands of white goats, standing alive in the sunlight. This miracle — stones transformed to goats (石羊化活) — became the defining legend of Huang Chuping, proof of his mastery over the natural world.

Convinced of his brother's attainment, Huang Chugui stayed on the mountain and studied Taoism alongside him. Both brothers eventually achieved full immortality. Huang Chuping took the title of Huang Da Xian (Great Immortal Huang), while Huang Chugui became known as Chiguang Xian Weng (赤松仙翁).

Huang Da Xian is renowned not only for miraculous powers but for his healing gifts. He is said to have treated countless people throughout his life, using herbal medicine and spiritual energy (qi) to cure illnesses that conventional medicine could not address. This healing dimension made him particularly beloved among ordinary people.

In the late nineteenth century, devotees carried his worship to Hong Kong, where the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple (嗇色園黃大仙祠) was established in 1921. The character of Huang Da Xian is captured in four words: Pu Ji Quan Shan (普濟勸善) — “universal salvation and moral encouragement.” The Huang Da Xian oracle lots (黄大仙签) are famous throughout the Cantonese world, allowing devotees to receive his spiritual guidance for questions of health, finances, relationships, and life's major decisions.

黄大仙：普济劝善，牧羊成仙

黄大仙（黃大仙），全名黄初平，是粤港澳及海外广府华人社区中最受崇拜的道教神明之一，以普济劝善著称，被无数信众视为最贴近民心、最愿意聆听常人祈愿的神仙。

黄初平生于东晋穆帝永和年间（约公元328年），浙江金华兰溪人，家境贫寒，自幼在山中牧羊为业，过着清贫却纯朴的乡野生活。

相传，黄初平约十五岁时，在牧羊途中，于金华山中偶遇一位道教仙人。仙人一眼看出这位少年根骨不凡，随即引导他进入赤城山的一处山洞，传授道法与内丹修炼之术。黄初平随仙而去，在洞中潜心修炼，以为不过数日，却不知洞外世界已悄然流逝了四十年。

其兄黄初起寻找失踪的弟弟，历经数十年，从未放弃。千辛万苦找到山洞后，他见到的弟弟，依然面如少年，神采奕奕，毫无老态。

黄初起问起当年那群羊的下落。黄初平淡然一笑，抬手一指山坡上散落的白石，高声呼道：「羊起！」话音甫落，满山白石应声而动，化为千百只白羊，跳跃奔腾，鲜活如初。这「石羊化活」的奇迹，成为黄大仙传说中最为人称道的神迹，象征着失去的一切，在神力与信念之下，皆可重新焕发生机。

黄初起目睹此景，心服口服，从此也随弟弟留于山中修炼道法，兄弟二人皆成仙道——黄初平被奉为「黄大仙」（赤松子），黄初起则被称为「赤松仙翁」。

黄大仙不仅以法力著称，更以医术救人无数。相传他精通草药之道，以内力与药方治愈了无数为疾病所苦的平民百姓，尤其对贫苦大众不计报酬，悉心施治。这份亲切的慈悲，令他在民间的声望远超一般高高在上的神明。

清末民初，信众将香火带入香港，于1921年在九龙竹园建立「嗇色园黄大仙祠」。黄大仙的精神，凝聚于「普济劝善」四字。黄大仙签（赤松子签）是粤港地区家喻户晓的求签传统，信众在神像前跪拜上香，摇动签筒，按签号取签诗，请解签者依诗意结合实际处境作出指引——无论健康、事业、感情、财运，皆可寻得方向。
